Cultivating Highly Specialized Engineers with an Aptitude for Design

MIKI, Ichiro
The Graduate School of Science and Technology consists of five Master’s and Doctoral degrees based on eight undergraduate courses offered by the School of Science and Technology at Meiji University. These Master’s and Doctoral degrees are in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Applied Chemistry, and Fundamental Science and Technology. The Graduate School has also initiated Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Frontier Sciences and Innovation, including programs in Safenology, Mathematical Business and Digital Content Studies, with the aim of integrating engineering with social sciences and humanities, thus adding a new research field to the school. The Graduate School aims to nurture young researchers with pioneering spirits and excellent professional engineers with an aptitude for design during the successive six year curriculum from undergraduate school to graduate school.
Japan has enjoyed world renown in the field of technology, the fruit of the labors of its innumerable engineers and researchers. Japan must continue along this path. Nowadays, however, the rate of prospective engineers among young people in Japan is declining, as is the trend in other Asian developed countries. Science and engineering students must first master basic subjects before they move on to study specialized professional subjects, which in this world of high technology and rapidly advancing sciences are myriad.
The Graduate School offers various advanced classes to develop the problem solving abilities of students. Through academic experimentation, experienced faculty and students work closely together, forging a marked bond that persists long after graduation. Students also engage in projects with local communities and corporate businesses, thus gaining authentic experience in current society.
The faculty is comprised of numerous researchers active in various areas, and many of the graduate students attend academic societies and international conferences to announce the results of their research. To encourage these activities, the Graduate School offers financial support to students: There is a range of scholarship systems, as well as Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant positions available.
So complete is our student support system that graduate students aspiring to be researchers can focus fully on their research. We hope many eager graduates will join us.
