Designing a New Style of Liberal Arts

YAMAIZUMI, Susumu
The Graduate School of Humanities, a comprehensive graduate school aiming to investigate humanity, culture and peaceful environments, is the first graduate school on the Izumi Campus. The campus is designed to be a global village, and the center of the internationalization of liberal arts education at Meiji University, with the Graduate School of Humanities as one of its main pillars.
The school sets the purpose of its research as the investigation of humanity and its adequate environment, and develops the creative thinking process to solve the problem of how we can create harmonious and cooperative living relationships in cultural, social and environmental contexts based on research of ethics, philosophy and religion. Some examples of these problems are the ethics of human activities in scientifically and technologically developed societies, understanding other cultures in a multi-cultural society, and the ‘Peace Studies’ approach to solving international disputes and environmental destruction.
Being a unique liberal arts graduate school, students from various backgrounds are sought. The faculty is composed of researchers of humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, and it is possible to offer students various interdisciplinary study opportunities. Furthermore, the curriculum is designed to lead students to a comprehensive approach to thinking.
Responding to the needs of a life-long study society, the school welcomes working adults and seniors who are willing to ponder the human condition and knowledge in a broad perspective.
What are your impressions and how do you live your life? We hope each individual will contribute to the design of ideas; such ideas generate a highly cultivated society. Founded in 2008, the school is still in its infancy. We hope you will join us in our quest to rear our fledgling school as an especially unique center of learning.
